BUBBLING BEEB

2015-09-28 04.00.52

On Wednesday July 6th 1988, the Daily Mirror painted a sorry picture of a bumbling BBC exterminating “more than 100” classic Doctor Who episodes. The tapes took up too much space and, in the days before domestic video, the BBC failed to predict the future value of the serial. Just ahead of the 25th anniversary, BBC “bosses fear[ed] some have been stolen and could end up with a high price tag on the black market.”

With the release of the Patrick Troughton 1967 serial ‘The Underwater Menace’ the number of missing episodes stands at 97.

Released on 26th October through the BBC shop, it was very nearly another story of BBC bumbling when earlier in the year, the partially recovered story was removed from the release schedules.

As in 1988, “fans of the cult show [were] furious with BBC,” this time successfully petitioning a rethink.

It’s a great lesson in fan pester power. But it’s one the Beeb keeps learning the hard way.
